Like grains of sand through our feeble fingers the Football season falls away.
Week 3 has come and gone friends and our Fantasy Football League is astir.
Many of us have tasted Victory, some of us have even tasted Defeat. We have plenty more Football to play and by the end we all will become quite accustom to both flavors (except for me ew).

Week 2 Recap

Alec, Will, Rosie/Julia, Sadie, Emma & Sam are the Week 2 winners 🥳

George, Joey, Tony, Kate, Sydney, & Stefan are the Week 2 losers ❌

Alec gets the highest score this week with 135.54 but Sydney retains the season high of 150.18. Tony has the honor of 2 consecutive weeks participating in the matchups with the closest final scores; he also has the more dubious honor of being on losing side of both of those matchups, in this case losing to Will’s 99.52 with a score of 93.32.

This week the highest scoring player was… free agent Tre Tucker lol
We all get a Ball-Knowing Demerit for collectively leaving these points on the bench I suppose.

The highest scoring rostered player was Emma’s Jonathan Taylor with 32.8, followed very closely by Sydney’s Vikings Defense with 32.0
…weird week.

Alec retains the top spot as George loses his undefeated status and loses second place to Sadie. Julia/Rosie have battled hard the past two weeks with 4 and 3 spots gained respectively, leaving them just outside the podium positions. On the other end Tony drops to last place after Sam makes a jump out of the dregs.

In other news, I’ve been thinking a lot about China…

I’m sure not particularly surprising to you all given my status as a Certified China Guy^TM but I keep running into stuff that just kinda gets stuck rolling around in my brain.
Do you wanna guess how many of the top 5 cities in the world by population are in China?

If you said 6 you’re right! (5 too I guess)

But admittedly, this is “city proper” and gets the benefit of some category fuzziness. Still, sorting by “urban area” gets us 2 Chinese cities before we get to New York and another 3 before LA.
Really India is the only one competing (winning even!) with China on population. They’re each basically 1/6th of the global population.

But in economic terms? No contest

Cribbing from Adam Tooze now;
Let’s look at coal production, historically a metric that offers a useful perspective on a country’s industrialization/economic growth.

China is producing coal at basically world-historic levels year over year.

“But Alec”, you whine “coal is a dirty, outdated, and inefficient source of energy that is steadily falling out of favor.”

A perceptive albeit annoying observation!

Lets look at solar capacity added instead:

From that same source,

China’s new-build solar additions in the last six months are more than the US has installed in total… Germany was once the global champion of solar. China’s new additions in six months are two times Germany’s installed capacity… In the first half of 2025 China’s new additions were more than twice the new capacity installed by the entire rest of the world this year.

There are distorting factors in play on the Chinese side. The H1 2025 figures reflect the late stage of a Five-year plan and an imminent shift in subsidy regime. Chinese businesses (and consumers) are hyper-reactive to incentives… the remarkable fact is that China could do far more.

The Chinese economy is operating on a scale that makes a lot of world history up to this point look like it’s merely a prelude…

But don’t mistake my interest for uncritical support. There is a real cost to the Chinese system; for Chinese people and for the rest of us too.
